IFSA Coaching Certification

Welcome to the IFSA Coach Certification Program. With the geographical expansion of the IFSA and the increase in athlete and coach membership, development of a formalized IFSA coaching certification program is essential to the continued health and long-term growth of our sport.

  • Freeride Technique
  • On-snow Freeride Tasks/Drills
  • Effective vs. Ineffective Coaching Techniques
  • Coaching Scenarios + Feedback
  • Group Venue Inspection + Line Evaluation

Access to venues requires current L100 or L200 training. Ensure that all IFSA Independent Athletes have a certified L100 parent or guardian coach.

Ticketing benefits and venue access is contingent on having an IFSA Coach Membership. LiveHeats did not migrate any existing coach accounts from the 2022-2023 season, as results are not tied to these. Please create a new account or if you have a child in LiveHeats you can add your membership to the same login. Get your memberships before the competition season, preferably by Dec 31. Coach Membership pricing is set to increase on January 1.

As a coach you’ll need both IFSA and regional memberships.

Need verification for an employer? First, make sure you have completed your certification course and purchased a membership. We are in a holding pattern for issuing digital certification documents though you are welcome to have your employer contact Carol@ifsafreeride.org for a verification.

L200 Certified coaches in the IFSA community exemplify advanced expertise in delivering safe and effective Freeride coaching. While L100 certification denotes entry-level written skills, the L200 course goes further by confirming a coach’s ability to handle scenarios in a live environment and certifying the necessary physical skills for competent Freeride coaching.

The impact of the L200 course extends beyond individual coaching proficiency, contributing to an elevated standard for Big Mountain Freeride coaches. This heightened standard has proven to enhance the quality of coaching in various programs and, importantly, has a positive influence on mitigating insurance liability concerns.

Noteworthy programs such as Palisades Tahoe, Smugglers’ Notch, and Jay Peak have recognized the value of IFSA L100 and L200 certifications by incorporating them into the pay scales of their coaching staff. To further strengthen the coaching landscape, we are actively engaging with clubs and teams to integrate IFSA coach certifications into their compensation structures, aligning with established practices observed in organizations like PSIA and USSA.

For additional information, please reach out to Josh Mattson, a valued member of our Board of Directors. The growing number of L100 and L200 certified coaches not only bolsters the credibility of our sport but also plays a crucial role in ensuring comprehensive insurance coverage.

REQUIREMENTS

1). Current L100 or L200 IFSA Coach Certification Training. L100 cert is valid for 2 season, L200 cert is valid for 3 seasons.

2). An active IFSA Coach Membership – memberships are the main source of revenue for IFSA. We appreciate your support.

To participate, access the competition venues, and enjoy ticketing benefits, coaches must have completed an IFSA Coaching Certification Course and be in possession of a current IFSA Coach Membership. In addition, it will be required for coaches to register for all events they plan to attend.

Coaches are required to register for any event they plan to attend.

A Coach Membership will be needed in order to register for events. There will be no fee associated with event registration, however, this extra step is essential for 2 reasons.

  • It is imperative for Event Organizers to have contact information for all attendees and to ensure local health authorities can effectively conduct contact tracing if needed.
  • Many resorts are implementing limits on the number of daily guests. An Event Organizer must have an accurate projection of attendees to ensure enough tickets are reserved for coaches and parents. If you are not registered for an event, you will not be granted ticketing benefits or access to the venue.
